Reports from the Mission Field
Report from Pastor Stephan du Plessis
March 2012
New Beginnings Care Center is a community driven project initiated due to the dire position that many members of the community face. We offer a sanctuary to the destitute. This is a registered public benefit/non-profit organization. We cater to the following population groups:
1. Street Children; destitute; prostitutes; substance abusers; dysfunctional; parolees; abused women and children.
2. Our inhabitant ‘make up’ is as follows: we currently house approximately 1000 people
3. They are cared for in the following manner: Clothing/housing; employment; counseling; drug/alcohol rehabilitation; schooling; family reconciliation as well as skills development.
4. Our center is situated in the Old Women’s Prison at 212 Commissioner Street, Boksburg and we also house approximately 30 people at The Haven Care Center at 94 Leeuwpoort Street, Boksburg.
Our population is divided as follows:
· Approximately 250 Single Women/single women with children
· Approximately 68 Families
· Approximately 500 Single men
· Approximately 140 Children
· Of which 79% are black inhabitants.
The above statistics are an estimate as we experience a 25% flux of people on a monthly basis.
New Beginnings Care Center is proudly partnered with Boksburg Welfare; Boksburg Child Welfare; Police Services; Churches; Magistrates Courts; Correctional Services; SANCA; Dept. of Education; Dept. of Labor; various local schools and local industry.
5. Education and ‘uplift’
We have a daycare center that caters for our children while preparing them for Grade R. Our preschool teachers are being trained in our Skills Training Center. This provides for an educational environment for toddlers and infants alike. We also have a computer training center. School leaving adolescents are either equipped via our SETA accredited Training Center or through assistance from Boksburg College through bursaries.
6. Alcohol/Drug Rehabilitation
An estimated 70% of our inhabitants suffer from an addiction to a substance of some form or another. As such, we work with SANCA who assists us with a “detox” programs. We also extend this by offering ongoing support through weekly group meetings and counseling.
Our present requirements are as follows:
Mielie Meal; Rice; Samp; Sugar; Beans; Vegetables; Meat Products; Dairy Products; Tinned Foods; Spices; Cooking Oil; Toiletries; Optical; and Financial Assistance.
We are also in need of: Pots; Pans; Cutlery; Refrigeration; Stoves; Household and Office Furniture; Deep Freezers; Stationary; Beds; Bedding; Mattresses; Carpets; Paint; Plumbing and Building Materials etc.
We would be greatly appreciative of any equipment that could be utilized for our uplift initiative such as: Circular/Jigsaws; Grinders; Chisels; Hammers; Nails; Wall Plugs; Gardening Tools and Implements such as Wheelbarrows; Spades; Brooms; Hose pipes; Lawn Mowers etc. Any computer equipment would also be of great assistance to us.
We try to maintain levels of morale within our population by involving people in various Church activities like Bible Study, Prayer Groups, and Youth Activities. Initiatives such as these, however, require logistical considerations such as fuel and transportation. If any assistance were made available to us in the sphere of newer vehicles and fuel costs, much of our burden would be alleviated.
To Any Potential Benefactor:
We are a running concern with a Center Board; Financial Board; Auditor; and Regular Audits and available financial statements on a monthly basis. The management of our center is accountable to an appointed Community Board.
In order to achieve our goals and objectives, we rely heavily on donations and sponsorships. We currently receive no assistance from any State or National Lottery Provisions.
We hereby make an appeal to any benefactor to assist where possible. Anything mentioned herein would be enormously appreciated. Any donation made to our organization is tax deductible.
Our Care Center doors are always open to visitors. Please feel free at any time to pay us a visit and inspect our processes.
